Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs 0.3-1.2 m tall, with tan latex

Stems: stems subherbaceous, woody only at base, unbranched or sparingly branched from base, pubescent

Roots:

Leaves: alternate Leaves elliptic, blades 15-27 cm long, 4-8.5 cm wide narrowly acuminate base cuneate upper surface green, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, lower surface whitish green, pubescent at least on the midrib and veins

Flowers: Inflorescences 6-16-flowered, pubescent, peduncles 5-20 mm long calyx lobes narrowly triangular, 3-5 mm long, apex acuminate corolla white, sometimes tinged with purple, 20-25 mm long, 3-4 mm wide, sparsely pubescent or subglabrous, the tube suberect to gently curved, the lobes spreading,1/3-1/2 as long as the tube; Staminal column glabrous; anthers pubescent, the lower 2 with apical tufts of white hairs Ovary inferior, 2-celled, often crowned with an annular nectary disk; ovule placentation axile, or when 1-celled with 2 parietal placentas; stigmas wet or dry, 2-lobed, appressed and nonreceptive as the style grows through the anther tube, pushing out the pollen, after which the stigmas spread apart and become receptive.

Fruit: Berries orange; ellipsoid; 8-10 mm long.

Ploidy: 2n = 28*
